About Mary

Mary Vasquez

Author / Transformational Speaker / Experience Wellness Advocate

In Mary’s powerful and inspiring book, A Rape Survivor’s Spiritual Journey: My Poems and Practical Exercises, she reveals her intimate healing journey with God through the darkness of childhood sexual abuse into the light of God’s love.

“What a story of faith and survival. This book should be in every clinic, every doctor and dentist office, on the pulpit of every minister to help bring those who need it comfort and to remind those who trespass that they should not,” says Nikki Giovanni, World-renowned Poet, Writer, Commentator, Activist, Educator, and one of Oprah Winfrey's Living Legends.

As a passionate advocate for survivors of childhood sexual abuse, Mary compassionately shares her story and encourages survivors to begin or continue their healing journey by deepening their relationship with their higher power.  God’s empowering love helped her love her Divinefulness, which is your True Self empowered by God’s love.  After finishing her book, her healing journey led to her conquering the Post-traumatic Stress (PTS) that haunted her for over 40 years.

Mary serves others through two nonprofit partners.  She also serves on the Planning Committee for the Chicagoland Trauma Informed Congregation Network, an effort by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), University of Illinois Hospital, and Advocate Health.  Born and raised in Chicago, Mary still lives there with her family.  Scroll down and listen to Mary's song.

When Life Gets You Down, Get Up!

When Life Gets You Down, Get Up!

Let Mary Help You LOVE Your Divinefulness

Listen to this clip of a rough cut of a song she wrote and produced without any musical background or knowledge.  All made possible by loving her Divinefulness, which is her True Self, empowered by God's love.  Follow Mary on Facebook, Twitter, or check back here for updates, so you know when she starts her 5-minute, guided visualization podcast on Mondays - Wednesdays and her bi-weekly Prayer Group phone calls!  All faiths welcome.

Story Behind the Song

After I decided to publish my first book, I thought about survivors visiting my website. I wanted to console them somehow; especially, if they were having a bad day. I kept thinking about the old “Cheers” TV series, and how it had such a fun and cheerful theme song. That’s what I wanted: a “feel good” theme song for my website, so I prayed for it.  Considering I know nothing about music, I believe God delivered big time.  Be sure to let me know what you think!

By the looks on their faces, I knew the few people I told about my idea didn’t think it was so great. I just couldn’t give up on it, so I started praying for it the summer of 2008. The words came to me over time, but it wasn’t until right before Christmas that year I finished the lyrics.

For the longest time, I knew the song was incomplete because it had no heart and soul. A stanza was missing. I finally understood after the words came to me. God held back the stanza, not because he was being stingy, but because I had to learn to live the words on my own before I could write them. I had to be authentic.

In 2009, I asked my friend Shyvone Blunt if she would record the song for me. I didn’t even know if she could sing. Something told me to ask her, and, boy, can she sing! God works in mysterious ways because Shyvone was estranged from God at the time. He loves drama, too, because I don’t know anything about music. The words and the music just started coming to me one day, and more songs just keep coming. I finished writing a rap song a while back (to be released), and God only knows what’s next.

Lyrics for “When Life Gets You Down, Get Up!”

Vocalist Shyvone Blunt
Musical Arrangement by Turrell Brown
Music and Lyrics by Mary Vasquez

Don’t listen to the voices in your head
convincing you that your dreams are dead.
Tell them. Right here. Right now. They’re wrong.
Go back and say, “No way. I’m strong!

When life gets you down, get up.
When life gets you down, get up. When life…
When life gets you down, get up.
When life gets you down, get up.
When life gets you down, get up. When life…
When life gets you down, get up.
When life gets you down, get up.

When your friends laugh and look at you
And say, “Your dreams won’t ever come true.”
Tell them. Right here. Right now. They’re wrong.
Get out! Get out! And move along.”

When life gets you down, get up.
When life gets you down, get up. When life…
When life gets you down, get up.
When life gets you down, get up.
When life gets you down, get up. When life…
When life gets you down, get up.
When life gets you down, get up.

When you’re settled in your new found life,
Things are goin’ great and there’s no more strife.
A good friend comes along n’ then you feel betrayed
When you want to quit and hide away.
Feelin’ like you can’t take life no more.
Get down on your knees ‘n keep hittin’ that floor.

When life kicks you down, pray hard. Pray hard! Pray hard ‘n find the light!

When you listen and you pray some more
Real soon you’ll find that open door
Just keep prayin’ hard; keep hittin’ that floor
Tell God. Right here. Right now. I’m yours.
I’ll give you all of me mind, body, and soul
He’ll pave a way and show you a new role.

When God lifts you up, give thanks. Give thanks! Give thanks and be the light!
When God lifts you up, give thanks. Give thanks! Give thanks and be the light!
When God lifts you up, give thanks. Give thanks! Give thanks and be the light!

Mission Statement

To help people of all faiths transform themselves after life-altering experiences by loving their Divinefulness, which is their true self empowered by God's love.

"The victory that conquers the world is our faith." (1 John 5:4)

Although quoted from the Bible, we believe people of all faiths can agree. Unfortunately, in the midst of our suffering, this universal truth often escapes us. During our darkest moments, we're drowning in our despair. We're struggling to save our lives and our sanity, and we can't or don't know how to pull ourselves out of the darkness to be able to reach out to God or anyone else. We feel that God and the entire world have abandoned us even though we know that God is always with us.

At Apprentice Butterflies Publishing, Inc., we hope that sharing our own victories will help you begin or continue your healing journey.

We agree to disagree about religion and beliefs, but we all agree on needing a God-centered, spiritual life. Whether you choose to call this all-powerful life force God, Adonai, or the divine creator by another name, is your choice. We are not here to judge but to love and support each other.

Love Your Divinefulness!

Did you know that as early as 1993, the American Psychological Association published a report referencing 45 clinical studies that found Post-traumatic Stress  (PTS) often occurred in crime victims of childhood sexual abuse? When they and others experience PTS, it mirrors the PTS war veterans suffer, so please be forgiving and gentle with yourself or your loved one.

If you had a life-altering experience, you already know healing is not easy, but remember you are NEVER alone. Others like you, loved ones, and supporters are with you in spirit, and we are praying for you every day from all over the world.  THAT'S A LOT OF LOVE ALL FOR YOU!!!

If you are a loved one beginning or continuing to provide support for someone on their healing journey, be assured that your love and support means the world to your loved one. Just listening, being compassionate and non-judgmental helps immensely!  GOD BLESS YOU!!!

If you are a minister, therapist, or someone else who serves them, GOD BLESS YOU, TOO!!!

I hope we have added some peacefulness to your day. We pray you find your inner strength and continue your healing journey or continue being someone’s light in the darkness.
